Narrative Text – Narrative text (narrative text or narrative text) is one of the forms of paragraphs that needs to be known in studying linguistics and literature. The function and purpose of narrative text are more or less the same, even though it is written differently, both in English and Indonesian.

Broadly speaking, narrative text is a written work that has the meaning of telling an event or story, so that it can consist of a series of paragraphs written in such a way. Grammatically, narrative text uses the past tense formula . This means that narrative text is a written work that tells events that have taken place in the past.

Narrative Text Structure

1. Title

The first structure of narrative text is the title . The title is a text structure that reflects the events narrated in it. In general, the title of a narrative text usually contains elements of the character’s name and the place where the event takes place. With a title, the arrangement of paragraphs in it is perfect to be called a narrative text.

2. Orientation

The next structure of narrative text is orientation. This orientation or orientation contains the opening paragraph regarding an event that will be retold. In general, an orientation contains an introduction or an introduction to the setting, so a paragraph that contains an orientation usually explains more about the character, place, and time of the incident.

3. Complication

The next narrative text structure is a complication. Complications are a number of paragraphs that function to develop events in the text. This means that the incident begins to be told about the problems faced by the characters, even the problems develop to the climax.

Complication consists of three conflicts, namely:

• Natural conflict , namely natural conflict or between universes.
• Social conflict , namely conflict between characters or actors.
• Psychological conflict , namely inner conflict or self.

4. Resolution

The last narrative text structure is resolution. Resolution is a term that refers to solving a character’s problem or conflict. Similar to its meaning, the  resolution paragraph serves to give the reader an idea of ​​the conflict resolution that occurs between the characters. In this paragraph it can be concluded that the story will have a good ending or vice versa.

1. The Legend of Lake Toba

Once upon a time, there was a man who was living in north Sumatra. He lived in a simple hut in a farming field. He did some gardening and fishing for his daily life. One day, while the man was do fishing, he caught a big golden fish in his trap. It was the biggest catc which he ever had in his life. Surprisingly, this fish turned into a beautiful princess.

He felt in love with her and proposed her to be his wife. She said, “Yes, but you have to promise not to tell anyone about the secret that I was once a fish, otherwise there will be ahuge disaster”. The man made the deal and they got married, live happily and had a daughter. Few years later, this daughter would help bringing lunch to her father out in the fields.

One day, his daughter was so hungry and she ate his father’s lunch. Unfortunately, he found out and got furious, and shouted; “You damned daughter of a fish”. The daughter ran home and asked her mother. The mother started crying, felt sad that her husband had broken his promise. Then she told her daughter to run up the hills because a huge disaster was about to come.

When her daughter left, she prayed. Soon there was a big earthquake followed by non-stop pouring rain. The whole area got flooded and became Toba Lake. She turned into a fish again and the man became the island of Samosir.

“One day, there lived a man who lived in northern Sumatra. He lives in a simple hut in the middle of a rice field area. Everyday, he does farming and fishing. Once, while he was fishing, he caught a big gold fish. This fish is the biggest fish he caught in his life. Apparently, the fish actually turned into a beautiful princess.

One day, the little princess was so hungry that she accidentally ate her father’s lunch. Unfortunately, his father found out about this and immediately scolded him; “You little fish!” The little girl ran back to the house and asked her mother. The mother began to cry, feeling sad that her husband had broken his promise. He then told his daughter to run up the hill because a big disaster was about to happen.

When her daughter left, she also prayed. Not long after, an earthquake occurred accompanied by heavy rain that did not stop. The whole area flooded and became Lake Toba. He turned into a fish again and the husband turned into Samosir Island.

2. The Lion and The Mouse

When he was awakened by a tiny mouse running across his body, a mighty Lion was sleeping in his lair. The lion then grabbed the frightened mouse with his huge paws and opened his mouth to swallow him directly. “Please, King,” begged the mouse, “Spare me this time and of course I will never forget your kindness. Someday I may be able to repay you”. The Lion thought that it was such an amusing idea that he let the poor creature go.

Sometimes later the lion was caught in a net laid by some hunters. Despite his great strength, the lion could not break free. Soon the forest echoed with angry load roars.

The little mouse heard the lion and ran to see what was wrong. As soon as he succeeded to make the lion free “There!” said the mouse proudly, “You laughed at me when I promised to repay your kindness, but now you know that even a tiny mouse can help a mighty Lion”.

Moral value:

• Little friends may prove to be great friends.
• Friend in need is friend indeed.

Some time later the lion was caught in a net laid by some hunters. Even with great strength, the lion could not break free. Soon the forest resounded with the roar of an angry lion. The little mouse heard the lion and ran to see what happened. Once he managed to make the lion free. “That’s!” said the mouse proudly. “You laughed at me when I promised to repay your kindness, but now you know that even a little mouse can help a mighty lion.”

Moral values:

• Even small friends can be great friends.
• Friends in need are real friends.

3. A Donkey and A Lapdog

Once upon a time there was a farmer who owned a little dog that he keeps constantly by his side and a donkey, which lived in a warm stable and got plenty of fresh grain and sweet hay. But, unfortunately the donkey was not satisfied with his condition.

“I slave all day long, hauling wood or pulling the cart to market while the dog sleeps on the master’s lap and eats from his plate!,” the donkey grumbled. “Perhaps, he thought, if he behaved like the dog, his master would reward him with the same life of ease.

That very night, the donkey crept out of the stable and into the house where the farmer sat at supper. “First I’ll frisk about and chase my tail, just as the dog does,” thought the donkey. And he danced about the room, flinging up his hooves until the table toppled over and dishes went flying.

“Now I’ll sit on his lap!” said the donkey, and he put his hooves up on the master’s chair.

“Help! Save me from this mad beast!” the terrified farmer bellowed. Then his servants came running and, with shouts and blows, drove the donkey back to the stable.

“I suppose I’ m a fine donkey, “the donkey lamented,” but I’ ll never be a lapdog!”Moral of the Story- What’s right for one may be wrong for another. So, never try to copy another person in front of you.

“Help! Save me from this mad beast!” shouted the farmer in fear. His helpers then ran and, with shouts and thumps, herded the donkey back into the stable.

“I thought I was a good donkey,” wailed the donkey, “but I will never be a lapdog!”

Moral of the story:

What is right for one may be wrong for another. So, never try to imitate others. Be yourself.
